Types of Sewer Utilities
Water and sewer utilities are a major need for all industrial, commercial and residential households in a given area. Potable water is provided into the industrial, commercial and residential premises through the use of the water utilities to ensure that all activities that require water run continuously with little or no disruption. Sewer utilities, on the other hand, are meant to carry wastewater generated from the commercial, industrial and residential setting away into a commonplace. Pipes for facilitating service delivery in water and sewer utilities usually run together as they both serve the same region although some sewer utilities run underground. The water pipes are required to be above the sewer pipes to avoid contamination of the potable water in case there is a leakage in the sewer pipes.
Waste water carried in sewer utilities is taken to a common place for disposal or treatment to make it safe for disposing into the environment. The wastewater carried is from all premises that are connected to the sewer system in an area. Sewer utilities can also accommodate storm water mainly in urban areas where the land is cemented hence hard for the water to infiltrate. Some areas also put in place two separate sewers to carry both the sewage and the stormwater. With the two systems, sewage and storm water can be managed differently as they have different wastes and can be put into different use when recycled. In a treatment plant where wastewater is taken, the organic nod inorganic pollutants are removed making the water safe for disposal into the environment. Sewer and water utility services are run by one company hence user pay for both services as one to the company. The payments collected are used in the maintenance of the sewer utilities.
Septic tanks are also a type of sewer utilities that are commonly used in areas where the area is nor connected to the municipal sewer utilities. There are various material used in making the septic tanks which include concrete, plastic or fiberglass to collect wastewater. Septic tanks are mainly used in residential areas since the wastewater generated is not a lot. Also, septic tanks can be able to treat the wastewater by the use of microorganism present inside. There are some measures one has to put in place to ensure prper running of the septic tank. These measure ensure that microorganism are no damaged and also the septic tanks such as preventing release of excessive oils and harmful chemicals. Septic tanks should be placed beneath the ground and they should be made in a way that they do not leak r release odors into the environment. Septic tanks are also required to be located at least 5 feet from the house in most areas.
